Jesus dies on the cross
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
Reflect on this image before and after the following reading.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. [John 19:26-27, 30a; Luke 23:46; John 19:30b]
Christ for us became obedient unto death: Even death on a cross. [see Philippians 2:8]
O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen.
